Choosing a boarding school is a significant decision for families, and while brochures and websites outline facilities and programmes, the most authentic insights come from the students who live the experience daily. At [Collège du Léman](https://edelweiss-panorama.ch/college-du-leman/), a vibrant international community in Geneva, Switzerland, students from over 120 nationalities come together, each with a unique story of adaptation and growth. In this article, we hand the narrative over to them.

Lavinia, a Grade 12 student from Italy, recalls the initial overwhelm of a new language and culture. “The language barrier made academics particularly challenging,” she shares. Yet, through persistent effort and the unwavering support of teachers and House Parents, she not only caught up but thrived, earning an academic award. Her journey underscores that boarding is not about facing challenges alone; it is about discovering a network of encouragement that fosters confidence and openness.

For Chihana from Japan, boarding catalysed independence. “I became more organised and independent because I am not living with my parents anymore,” she explains. Arriving with no English, she persevered, eventually achieving a GPA above 4.0. Her story highlights how the structured yet supportive environment empowers students to take ownership of their studies and push beyond perceived limits.

Friendships form the heartbeat of boarding life. Marjorie from the USA describes the annual ski weekend in Crans-Montana as a defining moment. “We all had Boarding in common, and it just felt like such a tight-knit family,” she says. From guessing games on the bus to helping each other on the slopes, these shared experiences create bonds that transcend nationality and background.

Chong Xi Filippo, also from Italy, found a different kind of lesson on the same trip. As a snowboarder, he faced repeated falls but persisted until he conquered the red slopes for the first time. “I had been able to break through my self-imposed mental ceiling,” he reflects. His experience embodies the school’s ethos: not perfection, but the courage and determination to work towards a goal.

Tea from Kosovo brings us back to the everyday rhythms that make a house feel like home. “House Parents are almost like our second parents,” she notes. From after-school activities to shared dinners and study hall, these routines provide comfort, structure, and a sense of belonging. Together, these voices paint a rich, honest picture of boarding at CDL—one of growth, resilience, and community.
