The range of school trips and excursions on offer today is infinitely greater than it was in decades past. As a pupil at [Collège Champittet](https://edelweiss-panorama.ch/champittet-college/) from 1976 to 1982, one alumnus particularly remembers trips to the Hospice du Grand-Saint-Bernard, to stay with the chanoines. It was there that he discovered ski touring with seal skins. In the evenings, with no mobile phones or TV, pupils would play table football and cards. What laughter, what energy they had! The rooms had between six and ten beds, if memory serves correctly: the pupils were so tired that they would fall asleep like logs as soon as lights out came round. A simpler life, perhaps a more authentic one. Another fond memory is of Diego, a classmate who was paraplegic. It seemed perfectly natural to the group to take him wherever they went. On the hills of Bex, after visiting the salt mines, they carried his wheelchair along all the dirt roads. Diego was a full member of the group; his difference was simply overlooked. The alumnus learnt a great deal and is now much more at ease when interacting with people with disabilities. Diego has become a lawyer in Lausanne and visits the school from time to time. These recollections illustrate how school trips have long been a school of life, fostering inclusion, resilience and camaraderie.

The school has significantly raised its ambitions, convinced that ‘travel broadens the mind’. Some pupils are taking part in a sports camp at the IMG Academy in Florida in October; another group will travel to Madagascar on a humanitarian trip; boarding pupils will go to Japan; and others will undertake an expedition to Kilimanjaro in February. These trips all form part of the school’s vision of an education that is open to the world, help to foster social bonds, spark curiosity and broaden the mind. Such experiences reflect a deliberate commitment to experiential learning, where pupils encounter new cultures, overcome challenges and develop empathy beyond the classroom. The evolution from simple mountain retreats to global expeditions demonstrates how the institution continues to adapt its offerings while preserving the core value of learning through travel. Educational consultants note that this progression aligns with best practices in international education, preparing students for an interconnected world.
