Learning a language is one thing; learning in a language is another. That distinction lies at the heart of bilingual education. When children use French and English not only during language lessons but as part of their everyday learning, languages become tools for thinking, communicating and discovering the world. For international families in Lausanne, choosing between a French, English or bilingual pathway is a common question. In multilingual Switzerland, a bilingual education offers the best of both worlds: strong roots in the local French-speaking environment alongside the confidence to learn and communicate in English. Research shows that the benefits of bilingualism go far beyond vocabulary. Bilingual children tend to demonstrate better executive function, outperforming monolingual peers in attention control, reasoning and flexible problem solving. Thinking in a second language has also been linked to more rational decision-making and greater ability to resist cognitive biases. Socially and emotionally, people who speak more than one language develop stronger empathy, sensitivity and intercultural competency—key skills for today’s interconnected world. These positive effects continue into later life, helping to preserve brain health and delay the onset of dementia. Beyond cognitive and personal advantages, bilingualism increases future opportunities, enabling students to study, work and live with confidence across countries, cultures and professional environments.

Many schools describe themselves as bilingual, but not all approaches are alike. At [Collège Champittet](https://edelweiss-panorama.ch/champittet-college/), the bilingual curriculum is designed to help students become fluent communicators in both English and French through gradual immersion, experienced native-speaking teachers and optional language support. In the bilingual Swiss primary school, students spend 70% of class time learning in French and 30% in English, with English gradually increasing to 40% by the end of primary. By secondary school, students are already confident communicators in both languages, and advanced coursework develops their fluency further. Three diploma pathways—the IBDP, the French Baccalauréat and the bilingual Swiss Maturité—allow students to tailor their education to future goals while continuing to grow language skills. Parents often ask whether bilingual education is right for their child, especially if the family speaks French, English or another language at home. Children have a natural advantage in picking up a second language, but bilingual education inevitably raises the cognitive bar. Providing the necessary language support is the best way to ensure success. At Collège Champittet, learners new to French or English can receive dedicated support: French as a Foreign Language is available from Grade 3, and English as an Additional Language support is also available from Grade 3. These programmes help ensure every child can thrive in a bilingual environment. Every child’s bilingual journey is different, but with the right support, learning in both French and English becomes a source of confidence, curiosity and opportunity, helping children feel at home in Lausanne while preparing them for a global future.
