Les étudiants de Beau Soleil traded the familiar peaks of the Swiss Alps for the vibrant shores of San Sebastián, Spain, during a recent Exeat weekend. The trip, designed to blend adventure with cultural immersion, offered a refreshing escape from the rigours of academic life. Leaving the mountainous backdrop behind, the group set their sights on the Atlantic coast, eager to embrace a different kind of challenge and discovery.
The journey began with a sense of anticipation as the students arrived in the Basque Country. Their first destination was the renowned Zurriola Beach, a surfer's paradise known for its consistent waves and lively atmosphere. Here, students participated in professional surfing lessons, learning the basics of paddling, popping up, and riding the waves. For many, it was their first time on a surfboard, and the experience proved both humbling and exhilarating. The instructors guided them through the fundamentals, ensuring safety while encouraging them to push their limits. Laughter and cheers echoed across the beach as students caught their first waves, celebrating each successful ride and learning from every wipeout.
The surfing sessions were not just about physical skill; they were also a lesson in resilience and teamwork. Students supported one another, sharing tips and offering encouragement as they navigated the challenges of the ocean. The sense of accomplishment after standing up on a board for the first time was palpable, and it fostered a spirit of camaraderie that extended beyond the water. Between sessions, the group explored the surrounding area, soaking in the coastal scenery and enjoying the relaxed seaside vibe that San Sebastián is famous for.
Beyond the waves, the Exeat trip provided a rich cultural tapestry for the students to explore. San Sebastián, with its stunning architecture and renowned culinary scene, offered endless opportunities for discovery. The group wandered through the charming streets of the Old Town, absorbing the history and vibrant atmosphere of the Basque region. A highlight of the cultural immersion was the chance to savour authentic Basque pintxos—small, flavourful snacks that are a staple of local cuisine. Students visited traditional pintxos bars, sampling a variety of these delicious bites and learning about the region's gastronomic traditions. The experience was not only a treat for the palate but also a window into the social fabric of San Sebastián, where food is a central part of community life.
The Exeat weekend was carefully designed to balance structured activities with free time, allowing students to exercise independence and make personal discoveries. Whether exploring the city's landmarks, shopping for souvenirs, or simply relaxing on the beach, students had the opportunity to shape their own experience. This blend of adventure and autonomy is a hallmark of the Exeat programme, which aims to foster personal growth and global awareness. The trip to San Sebastián exemplified how travel can be both fun and educational, broadening horizons and creating lasting memories.
As the weekend drew to a close, students returned to Beau Soleil with a renewed sense of energy and a collection of stories to share. The Exeat adventure had successfully combined the thrill of surfing with the richness of Basque culture, leaving participants with a deeper appreciation for the world beyond the classroom. Such experiences are integral to the holistic education provided at Beau Soleil, where learning extends far beyond textbooks and into the real world.
