Unforgettable Cultural Immersion: Collège Champittet Boarders Explore Rome’s Historic & Spiritual Heart

In November, boarding students from Collège Champittet embarked on a profound five-day journey to Rome, a city unparalleled in its fusion of culture, history, and spirituality. The trip began with an immediate immersion into the Eternal City's vibrant atmosphere. Students explored iconic public spaces like the Piazza del Popolo and Piazza di Spagna, strolled down the bustling Via del Corso, and witnessed the illuminated Trevi Fountain by night, followed by a traditional Italian dinner. The following day deepened their historical understanding with a walk along the Tiber River to Castel Sant'Angelo, a structure that has served as a mausoleum, fortress, and museum through the centuries. The afternoon was dedicated to the spiritual and artistic epicenter of the Vatican. Students toured the Vatican Museums and the majestic St. Peter's Basilica, admiring the architectural grandeur and the profound cultural significance of these sites. A special tour with the Swiss Guards provided unique insight into the Vatican's traditions. The day concluded with a stroll through the charming, cobblestone streets of the Trastevere neighbourhood, allowing students to experience the city's lively local character.

The exploration continued as students visited two of Rome's major papal basilicas: Saint John Lateran and Saint Mary Major, further connecting with the city's deep spiritual roots. This was complemented by ascending the marble Holy Steps to the papal chapel. A visit to the iconic Colosseum was, of course, a pivotal highlight, bringing ancient history to life. The itinerary also included authentic Roman experiences, such as shopping in the city centre, people-watching in the piazzas, and enjoying gelato. On the fourth day, the focus shifted to Ancient Rome. The group visited the Circus Maximus and climbed Aventine Hill for panoramic views, including the famous keyhole vista at the Knights of Malta gate. They explored the Imperial Forums and walked through the historic Jewish Ghetto, contemplating the many layers of the city's past. The journey concluded on a memorable note with attendance at a mass in St. Peter's Square, where students even saw the Pope, providing a fitting and inspirational finale to an educational trip that transformed Rome into a living classroom.
